LPNU 1203 - Practical Nursing Perspectives

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Practical Nursing program
This course includes the discussion of the concepts of health, health maintenance, and human development throughout the life cycle, effects of stress and related defense or coping mechanisms are introduced along with the use of therapeutic communication. The course identifies trends in health care and local, state, and national health resources available for the maintenance of health. Patients’ rights and responsibilities are explained to students as well as the local, state, and national resources that are available to help patients make informed decisions. Students learn about the role of the practical nurse, the history of practical nursing education, necessary vocational adjustments, and the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners, and an introduction to the laws and rules governing practical nursing practice in Louisiana (the Revised Statutes, Title 37, Chapter 11, Subpart II, Practical Nurses and LAC 46:XLVII, Nurses, Subpart 1, Practical Nurses). Legal, ethical, and cultural issues relevant to client care are addressed. Medical terms and commonly used medical/nursing abbreviations are also covered.
